Castle

Burgruine Falkenstein

78713 Schramberg

Beschreibung

The imposing Falkenstein castle ruins, which are divided into the lower and upper Falkenstein, are well hidden in the middle of an idyllic alpine forest area. It is impressive how the ruins are built into the rough rocks.
Falkenstein is the oldest castle in the Schramberg district. It was built around 1150 by a local noble family from Kappel near Villingen. In the Middle Ages, the Lords of Falkenstein were represented as abbots and choirs, as well as canons in the monasteries of Einsiedeln, St. Gallen, St. Georgen in the Black Forest, Strasbourg and Reichenau. Between 1444 and 1449, Jakob and Konrad von Falkenstein finally sold the castle and most of its possessions to Count Ludwig von Württemberg. In the middle of the 15th century, Hans von Rechberg acquired Falkenstein Castle and the nearby Ramstein Castle. He also had Hohenschramberg Castle built and thus founded the Lordship of Schramberg. Falkenstein Castle was destroyed in battle in 1491.
